Americans Don't Want Data Centers In Their Backyard. Investors Don't Want Them On Their Balance Sheet. But Here We Are, Data Centers Appearing Everywhere!
Thank you. Source states “This map shows concerns submitted by residents, not a registry of every AI data center.” Recommend correcting image subtitle. Nice article, TY.
What if the answer to the growing demand for data centers wasn't more strain on the land, the water, and the communities around them, but instead a new era of sustainability and ingenuity?
What if the same creativity that powers artificial intelligence could be directed toward cleaner energy, smarter cooling systems, and technologies that leave the world better than they found it?
There’s something hopeful in that vision, a future where innovation doesn't compete with nature but works alongside it, where the tools we build become part of the solution to challenges that have troubled us for generations.
Like a mountain stream finding its way through the landscape, perhaps the greatest promise of technology is not simply what it can create, but how it can help us live more thoughtfully, more efficiently, and more harmoniously with the world we share.
according to flatt\brookfield, the right mix of compute will fall quite short.
what we are seeing is probably overbuild of specialty. as cloud migration continues (especially non-U.S.), general purpose is probably durable but facing the same cost escalations due to AI hype. thus it may also turn out non-economic in some cases.
The over build will come from those not building to meet their own needs. Many data centers are being constructed by investors with no direct need, their sole purpose is renting out all of the capacity to third parties. That is where the over build is likely to occur. There will be distressed assets, I am sure of that.
Then you have the precarious position of OpenAI, contracting to spend far more than it is generating. They are being propped up by NVIDIA in this ciruclar funding mess. Oracle is caught up in the mess. Have you seen the credit spread on Oracle? It is dicing with death. If any of these companies goes down, then the circular funding chain breaks. Then you have more distressed assets.
Amazon will come out smiling. It can’t build capacity fast enough to meet demand at AWS. It is its own data centre customer. No worries there.
well, brookfield doesnt fund data nor power centers for their own use.
we rely on brookfield's competence in contract construction in case they themselves are not always building durable utility compute.
but am much less worried about brookfield specifically, versus how many competent players go down when openAI falls apart, certainly taking some of oracle with it on sentiment alone.
